Junior Years (Grade 1–5)

Hudson teaches Saxon mathematics, a highly regarded, rigorous program that spirals the instruction of each concept and continues to review information introduced earlier. This allows students the time to practice and retain math concepts to the level of mastery.

Students learn to speak, read, and write in dynamic classes that follow the Action in Motion (AIM) program, which culls important vocabulary and grammar to be learned in each unit and incorporates them into a play. During Junior Years, students start to familiarize themselves with plays written in French.

Our performance-based music program fosters patience, commitment and self-expression. In Grade 1, students gain an appreciation of song, rhythm and movement. Our Grade 2–4 curriculum focuses on music theory and the ukulele, and from Grade 5, students learn concert band instruments alongside the theory, history and elements of music. All students learn to read, understand and actively listen to music at their respective level, and perform in holiday and end-of-year concerts.

In Grade 2, students are introduced to Code.org® and Codeville. Grade 3 students continue with Code.org®, add Dash & Dot robotics and Minecraft. In Grade 4, students start with CS First Introduction while developing more skill with Dash & Dot and Minecraft. Grade 5 students then take on Micro:bit Coding, CS First Game Building, and Minecraft Coding Challenges.

There are three seasons of athletics, including seasonal co-curricular activities. Students compete against other private schools in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) within the Small Schools Athletic Federation (SSAF), which has approximately 65 member schools. Examples of recent athletics offered: Badminton, Basketball, Personalized Fitness, Soccer (Indoor & Outdoor), Softball, Track & Field, and Volleyball.

Clubs and activities for junior years students include: external field trips to museums and galleries; Band; Chess; Choir; Cooking; Creative Writing; Dance; Drama; Robotics; Science; and more. Grade 4-6 students also participate in multi-day camp excursion to challenge themselves physically and emotionally while developing teamwork skills and building closer friendships.

Each month, students are introduced to a particular value that we encourage Hudson students to practice and embody. These values are incorporated into the daily curriculum, and students learn the meaning of these values. Much of this character education takes place beyond the classroom and core academic curriculum, forming an integral part of the day-to-day fabric of our school.
