This year the University of Waterloo cancelled the Gauss Math Contest because of the COVID pandemic. Hudson College has participated in the Gauss Contest every year for the past 7 years. This event has become a yearly tradition that the Middle School looks forward to.
Though the University of Waterloo formally cancelled the Gauss Contest, Hudson administrators and our Grade 7 and 8 Math teachers decided to keep the annual tradition by scheduling our own online Gauss test.
On May 13, our Grade 7 and 8 students participated in the Hudson College online Gauss Contest. Both the Grade 7 and 8 tests were written using questions from prior Gauss Contests accessible on the University of Waterloo website. Our students did not know which years we were using from previously written Gauss Contests.
Like the actual test, our online Gauss test had 25 questions divided into 3 sections. We used the same marking scheme used by the University of Waterloo – a total of 150 points.
How Did We Do?
Please note: in order to better understand our results, I referenced the results of the Gauss Contest from May 2019. My review of years of pastresults indicates similar percentages every year. We focus on the results of the Grade 8 students as they have benefitted longest from our Saxon math program and we celebrate their achievement as they leave our elementary division and move into high school in September.
In 2019, 17,396 Canadian Grade 8 students were represented in the Gauss Contest. The average score for these students was 86.5. Hudson’s Grade 8 average score this year is 97.4. While only 2.05% of 2019 represented participants scored in the highest score bracket of 136 – 150 points. Hudson’s Grade 8 had 12.82% achievement in this category.
In 2019, 16 of the 17,396 Grade 8 students scored perfect (150 points). This year 4 out of 39 Hudson Grade 8 students scored perfect (150 points).
We are very proud of the hard work of all our students and our Math teachers. Congratulations to Ryan, Katie, Maria and Juliet for attaining a perfect score on the Hudson College online Gauss Contest.
Grade 7 students – we are proud of your work on the test – well done!
