The grade ones are currently studying 3-dimensional and 2-dimensional geometry in Mathematics. One of the topics in this unit is to sort geometric figures according to common attributes or characteristics. Hula hoops were used to create a sorting template, (a Venn Diagram). In order to enrich the grade one students, they were asked to work in collaborative groups to create a secret sorting rule. Students then observed the finished sorted objects of other teams and were asked to determine the secret sorting rule used. The team whose work was being observed then revealed their sorting rule using mathematical vocabulary relevant to the unit. Great work!
