Character is defined as a) The mental, moral, and ethical qualities distinctive to an individual and, b) The distinctive nature of something.
When we talk about the importance of character education at Hudson, our goal is to instill and reinforce those “metal, moral, and ethical qualities” that we hope all of our students will learn, practice, and demonstrate.
We often say that teaching students to be good academically is only one-half of our job as educators; teaching them to be equally good citizens of good character is the other half to having them become happy and successful young people.
Every year since Hudson College’s inception, we have integrated character education throughout the entire curriculum and recognized certain students for their special achievements during our monthly Character Awards, held at the conclusion of every school month. For the month of December, the character trait is compassion, which is especially relevant at this time of the year, when it is important to remember how fortunate we are, and how important it is to do our part to help those less fortunate than us.
Our goal at Hudson this year is to help raise funds for two different charities – Toy Mountain and the Toronto Star’s Santa Claus Fund.
Taking part in the 2012 Toy Mountain campaign is easy! Simply buy a new toy (any denomination) and place it (unwrapped) at the bottom of our Xmas Tree located in the Main Lobby of the school. A note from the campaign organizers – when buying toys, please be aware that what they are most in need of are toys for infants/toddlers (0-2 years) and teenagers (13-17).
We will collect toys right up until the morning of our Concert on the 20th.
Taking part in the Santa Claus Fund is also easy! We are selling Raffle Tickets in booklets of five tickets, with great prizes to be won on the evening of our Holiday Concert on December 20th. Hudson will then donate a portion of the total proceeds raised from the Raffle to the Fund.
Thank you very much in advance for your generous donation to our Toy Mountain and Toronto Star Santa Claus Fund campaigns and for believing, as we do, in the importance of helping others!
